The artwork shown in this gallery has been produced by taking photographs or in-game digital stills from Generation Zero, a 2019 title from Developer & Publisher Systemic Reaction who belong to the Avalanche Studios Group. The game takes place in an alternate 1989 Sweden where violent robots have taken over. The robots range in size from tiny scouting drones to massive robots that tower over the houses. The player assumes the role of a Swedish teenager who returns from an island excursion to find that the local populace has disappeared as a result of the robotic invasion. While striving to survive in the Swedish wilderness, the player must figure out a means to beat the machines and learn what happened to people who lived there.
The featured images have all been captured while in-game, using Photo mode or mods to remove or hide the player HUD. These images have then been further manipulated by myself using the latest digital image manipulation software and plugins.
I claim no copyright over any of these images and their original likeness remain the copyright of the original developers and artists of the game.
1. Across the River – Added duplex filtering to this image and some detail work in its shadows. A film grain was added too. 2. The Bay – The exposure was adjusted on this image to blow out the light from the sun and make use of the water for reflections. Highlights and detailing was added to provide intensity to the top left of the image. 3. Midnight – This was already a night-time shot but for this image I converted to grey scale and removed any remaining tints. I added some film grain and a little vignette around the frame of the image. 4. Snowy Road – This was a pretty washed out image to start with so I increased the saturation and added in a little old-photo style tint to pick up the details a little more. 5. Rise – I overexposed the sunlight in the sky in this image which washed out the reflection on the ground too. Added a strong vignette for framing. 6. The Fields – This sky had a lovely pattern flowing through it originally so I added some detail to the clouds to give it a little more depth then cranked up the saturation to finish.
An extremely clever game developer, photographer and artist named Matt Newell is busy at work creating something that will be called ‘Lushfoil Photography Simulator’ and is a game that will be available to purchase via Steam.
In the past, there have been preview versions of parts of this title released and one such part was including parts of Mýrdalssandur, Iceland. – A section of barren, mossy landscape from Iceland’s southern coast.
While playing that portion of this simulator I was in awe of the scenes that were presented in front of me, so I had to capture a few of them for myself.
I then further manipulated them using the latest digital photography manipulation techniques and software into the images featured in the gallery above.

1. Desolation – I’ve added film grain to pick up some of the more hidden details in this image and used a colored nd filter on the top of the sky. 2. Grey Days – I’ve tilted the framing of this shot slightly to give more of a visual influence to the horizon rather than the foreground. I’ve smoothed the water slightly to give a stiller look and feel. 3. Hellish – I’ve added the obvious red tint to this image then over-exposed it to hell and back so much so the colour reflects in the black rock in the foreground. I’ve tilt-shifted the image in the lower 3rd as well.
